When Did Wolves Become Dogs?
Scientists once believed the first domesticated wolves appeared 15,000 years ago in the Middle East. Recent studies, however, following the discovery of a 35,000 year-old Siberian wolf bone, indicate that canine domestication likely occurred 27,000 to 40,000 years ago. Genetic studies reveal that modern day dogs originated, probably simultaneously, in China, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Wolves were initially attracted to human camps to scavenge for food. The bond was mutually beneficial in that humans could provide shelter and protection, and wolves could help bring down prey. Over time, wolves started traveling with humans and eventually, a change, similar to natural selection, occurred, producing the dog that we know and love today.
