Who Was the First Dog of Hollywood?
The first dog of Hollywood was none other than Rin Tin Tin. Rescued from a World War I battlefield in France, the talented German Shepherd got his big break when he replaced a camera-shy wolf in The Man from Hell's River, (1922). He was an overnight sensation and quickly pawed his way into other film contracts--literally as he signed his contracts with his paw print. His first starring role, Where the North Begins (1923), was a huge success and has been credited with saving Warner Brothers from bankruptcy. His canine career includes 27 movies, radio shows, and numerous endorsement deals. The beloved celebrity dog earned worldwide fame and was even honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His death on August 10, 1932, at age 14, made headline news. The whole country mourned. Rin Tin Tin is still remembered fondly today, and his legacy lives on in his offspring.
