Remembering Jenny, Titanic's Ship Cat
The ill-fated RMS Titanic, which sank on April 15, 1912, had an official ship cat named Jenny. Transferred from Titanic ’s sister ship, Olympic, Jenny served as the ship’s mascot and kept the rodent population down. She lived in the galley where the staff fed her kitchen scraps. The week before Titanic sailed from Southampton, she gave birth to several kittens. So what was the fate of Jenny and her kittens? As the first passengers boarded the ship on April 10 at Southampton, Jenny was seen carrying her kittens, one by one, off the ship. Jim the scullion, her unofficial caretaker, saw her leaving the ship with her kittens and thought it was an omen. So he packed up his things and left the ship as well. The story could be a tall tale, but the account was reported in newspapers after the ship sank. Let’s hope that Jenny truly did save herself, her kittens, and her human caretaker.
