A Presidential Bird Obsession?
President and founding father, Thomas Jefferson loved birds, and is said to be the first president to have a pet live in the White House. He had four birds, but his favorite was Dick the Mockingbird, who sat on Jefferson’s shoulder while he worked. Jefferson kept Dick’s cage in a special area in his study among plants on a windowsill where he would leave the cage open and allow Dick free range of the room. The mockingbird would perch on Jefferson’s couch and follow him up the stairs each night to sing him to sleep. Jefferson would even put food between his lips and Dick would swoop down and take it from him. When Jefferson played his violin, Dick would join in for a duet, pouring out a beautiful bird song in perfect tune to the music. An acquaintance of Jefferson wrote, “How he loved the bird! He could not live without something to love… his bird and his flowers became the objects of his tender care.”
