The term "Zoo" is the shortened form of "zoological garden" and it was first used to name the Clifton Zoo in the UK in 1847 when it first appeared in print.
The abbreviation "Zoo" gained popularity with the song "Walking in the Zoo on Sunday" by Alfred Vance in the 1860s.
 The first public zoo to be opened in the United States was the Central Park Zoo at New York in 1860, nowadays managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
With the new environmental movement, the old concept of "Zoo" became highly criticized, so zoo professionals strategically came up with terms like "conservation park" or "biopark".
The first known zoo is from Egypt, discovered in 2009 at Hierakonpolis excavations it dates from 3500 B.C. and it included animals like hippos, hartebeest, elephants, baboons and wildcats.
The oldest running zoo is in Vienna, Austria, the Schonbrunn Zoo was founded in 1752 as an Imperial Menagerie and opened to the public in 1765.
